Chocolatier extraordinaire

Chocolatier extraordinaire Thomas Haas is sitting at his kitchen table perusing a front-page Vancouver Sun story about Michael BublÃ. The singer just married in Argentina, with a second wedding planned for Vancouver. I should make his wedding cake, Haas says. Im a huge Michael Bublà fan. We have him in the stores playing all the time.

A few years ago, the two met on a flight back from New York where Haas had been doing a Vancouver chefs event at Restaurant Daniel. The organizers flew Haas first class, and Bublà sat beside him.

There were other chefs with us, and we had such a blast on that flight. He started singing, and we talked about Canucks and hockey and cooking. It was the best flight ever.

With Haas, everything leads back to work. When he and wife Lisa purchased their home in North Vancouvers Edgemont Village in 2007, one of the attractions was its convenience to the shop on the North Shore waterfront. I can do two right turns, and I go all the way down and Im right at the factory, says Haas.

Haass busiest time is October through April, with one holiday after another. Haas says Christmas is the biggest because of corporate gift-buying, and Valentines Day is the craziest because its a two-day mayhem of men-only shopping.

But Easter is the most fun because it brings out the kid out in him. This Easter, the shops are brimming with fanciful chocolates, too exquisite to eat, but too delectable not to. He and the staff donate their time to creating fabulous chocolate sculptures to raffle for childrens charities, each requiring about 20 hours labour. There are two at the North Vancouver store and two at the Kitsilano location. Tickets are $5 each, and winners will be chosen at 2 pm today.

As a child, Haas -a fourth-generation pâtissier -lived above his parents Black Forest cafà and bake shop in Germany, where he began helping out at the age of 10. At 16, he apprenticed under a pastry chef in another town. In 1995, after working in Switzerland and France, he was hired as executive pastry chef by the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver. Three years later, he was off to New York as pastry chef to restaurateur Daniel Boulud.

I loved it so much that I know that if Id stayed there, I would probably not be a good husband and a good father because I would just dedicate myself to work, he says.

Bounce TV debuting this fall for African-Americans

A new broadcast television network based in Atlanta and aimed at African-Americans will debut this fall.

Bounce TV said Monday it will target African-Americans primarily between the ages of 25-54 with a programming mix of theatrical motion pictures, live sporting events, documentaries, specials, inspirational faith-based programs, off-net series and original programming. It will air 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It has already gained the television rights to nearly 400 motion pictures through multi-year licensing agreements with NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution, Sony Pictures Television, Codeblack Entertainment and Image Entertainment. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The network also inked a multi-year rights agreement with Urban Sports Entertainment Group (USEG) to televise both football and basketball games from the nations largest African-American athletic conference — the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Financial terms were not reported.

The network’s founding group is led by Andrew Young, Martin Luther King III and Andrew Bo Young III.

Rob Hardy and Will Packer, co-founders of Rainforest Films, one of the top African-American production companies in the world, will also play important roles with Bounce TV. Hardy will serve as chief content officer while Packer will be chief strategy and marketing officer.

Former Turner Broadcasting System Inc. executives Ryan Glover and Jonathan Katz will serve as executive vice presidents.

There are nearly 13 million Hispanic television households that are served by dozens of Spanish and Spanish-language versions of networks,” Glover said in a statement. “Yet, the more than 14 million African-American TV households have just a few dedicated cable channels and no over-the-air networks — until now. Bounce TV will fill the void for people who are hungry for more African American related programming, stories, characters, sports and events,

OMG! WTF, economical politicians?

OMG! WTF, economical politicians?

OMG! WTF, economical politicians? Everyones favorite mouthpieces in Congress continue to debate whether or not to shut down the government. Reality TV mogul Donald Trump has something to say about it. Former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin and former TV show host Glenn Beck both have something to say about it. Theres a general pounding of any podium that the polarizing forces in Congress can get close to. With microphones crammed in their faces, both sides are looking to the other as the culprit and in the wake of the blame game, the American people have no idea what is going on.

Of course, there is also arguing about what caused the government to get to the brink of shutdown last week. Heres what we will be told: its completely political. No one is actively seeking to do anything, whether cut or spend. Instead, they are establishing talking points for the next panel at which theyll be sitting at a network that likely doesnt pay its fair share of taxes.

Senator Harry Reid mumbled abortion over and over again. While Senate Republican whip Jon Kyls pants must have been flame retardant, because he told a great big whopper of a lie on the Senate floor. He said, Everybody goes to clinics, to hospitals, to doctors, and so on. Some people go to Planned Parenthood. But you don?t have to go to Planned Parenthood to get your cholesterol or your blood pressure checked. If you want an abortion, you go to Planned Parenthood, and that?s well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does.

Bzzt. As the smoke alarms went off on the Senate floor, Politifact pointed out that perhaps Kyl isnt quite the expert that he posited to be. As the facts got in the way of his point, he decided to flip it exactly opposite. Planned Parenthoods services are actually 90 percent preventive with only 3 percent of its patients there for abortions.

Whats this have to do with the budget, you say? Well, nothing. Planned Parenthood received $363 million in 2008-2009. Republicans in the House of Representatives voted unanimously to continue subsidizing oil companies to the tune of $3.6 billion. The so-called big spender in the White House would have liked to see that go away. If the unnecessary spending was going to be cut, doesnt it make sense that those toeing the company line would have cut the bigger one first? Especially the one that had support from other side of the aisle? Instead, the budget, the economy, and the hard-working Americans who are paying for an Exxon executives newest vacation home are ignored to score political points. OMG! WTF, economical politicians?

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) Nevada Senator John Ensign announced Thursday that he is resigning from office. In a letter to Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Ensign will state that his resignation from office is effective as of May3, 2011.

This comes just one month after Ensign, damaged politically and facing a Senate ethics investigation over an extramarital affair, announced that he was not going to seek re-election in 2012.

The Republican senator acknowledged in June 2009 that he had an extramarital affair with Cynthia Hampton, a former member of his campaign staff, and that he had helped her husband, Doug Hampton, a member of his congressional staff, obtain lobbying work with a Nevada company.

Ensign is also under investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee. In recent months, he had been adamant that he would seek re-election and that he did nothing to violate the law or Senate ethics rules.

Elected to the House in 1994, the former veterinarian preached family values, Christian fellowship and fiscal responsibility.

Ensign became a rising star after he was elected to the Senate in 2000, and was eventually named the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Senate GOPs campaign arm. A 2009 trip to Iowa sparked speculation about a future presidential bid.

District 150 addressing discipline for disabled students

District 150 on Monday said it is taking steps to correct a years-old problem of how it disciplines students with disabilities after warnings by the state.

Maureen Langholf, who earlier this year was named director of special education at District 150, said it has put in place more intervention procedures, provided additional social training to special education teachers, and even began placing some students in half-day programs at the Moss Avenue building that houses Peoria Alternative High School and the Adult Education Center.

Its stopped the high number of days per child who have been suspended, Langholf said Monday prior to the School Board putting on public display a new policy. She also acknowledged the decreased numbers are not necessarily indicative of less bad behavior.

Langholf said the goal is to help get at the root problem of why students are misbehaving and addressing it, rather than simply applying punitive measures, not to mention addressing federal law. Students also are receiving more educational services, with more than three hours in a school setting versus one hour by a tutor at home.

Under the revised discipline guidelines for students with disabilities, students may be suspended for no more than 10 days each year. After 10 days out, the district must provide educational services in accordance with that students Individual Education Plan. Behavior intervention plans also must be established.

A special education student who carries or possesses a weapon to or at school, possesses or uses illegal drugs or inflicts serious bodily injury upon another person at school shall be placed in an alternative educational setting for no more than 45 school days, the revised policy states.

Superintendent Grenita Lathan said Monday the rules cannot prevent expulsion of a special education student.

At issue with the state has been the school districts past practice of suspending students with disabilities in increments of up to three days after they already had been suspended for 10 days, which violates federal law. Its unclear how many students were included in the citation from the state, which ranges from 2007 to 2010.

No additional staff members were hired for the changes put in place this year, though more work from teachers, administrators and special education staff is required, officials said.

Its more work for schools, but its part of our responsibility, said Bill Salzman, the districts director of student affairs.

The new policy, which district officials say follows the law, is expected to go before the board next month for formal adoption.

Also Monday, the School Board:

- Approved a one-year extension for Chartwells to provide food for the school district. Based on a Consumer Price Index, cost of the contract, which is provided on a per meal rate, will increase by 1.3 percent for next year.

During 2009-10, District 150 paid $3,342,418 for 818,073 breakfast meals, 1,622,440 lunches and 42,336 snacks. Of the total meals, more than 91 percent of the breakfasts and nearly 85 percent of lunches were federally reimbursed as free or reduced.

District 150 Treasurer David Kinney said the 1.3 percent cap would go away if the district decided to rebid the food service, adding that the cost of food has risen steeply since last year.

Model Rocker

Miles Kane may be a dapper young rocker with the world at his feet, but occasionally he sounds like a shell-shocked veteran sharing war stories. Fame is a learning curve, he says in a treacly Liverpool burr. One minute youre at number one and youre shagging loads of birds. And its easy. Whats hard is when reality strikes and youre back in the basement.

A thin, nervy lad who favours bespoke designer suits and appears to have taken out a long-term lease on Liam Gallaghers bowl-cut, Kane (25) is full of contradictions. He has dated supermodel Agyness Deyn, was in a chart-topping duo with Arctic Monkey Alex Turner and had the other Gallagher, Noel, strum guitar on his forthcoming solo album.

However, hes not quite there as a full blown rock star and, on a sunny afternoon in Dublins FitzWilliam Hotel, can pass unrecognised among the elderly Americans in blindingly bright sweaters. With a hugely hyped debut on the way, the novelty of the predicament isnt lost on him.

When he talks about being in the basement hes referring to his previous band, The Rascals. Kane had fronted these Britrock also-rans for several years at the time he struck up an acquaintance with Turner. On hiatus from their day jobs, they formed the Last Shadow Puppets, a Scott Walker-esque side project that saw the pair reinvent themselves as turtle-necked, string-soaked 60s crooners.

Conceived of as a lark, the Shadow Puppets became an unexpected success, earning a Mercury nomination, topping the UK album charts and packing venues such as Londons Royal Albert Hall. Soon, though, Turner returned to rocking arenas with Arctic Monkeys. Kane, meanwhile, was back on the bottom rung with The Rascals, touring in a beat-up tour van and playing cosy venues such as Whelans. Crashing to earth was not a pleasant experience.

After the height of the Shadow Puppets, it was quite a comedown, he says, idly chugging an Americano. We were doing these little gigs. Nobody was turning up. Also it was getting weird with the label I was on at the time. Then, when we split up, it was even worse. It was depressing, I felt low.

To add to his sense of dislocation, he was exiting a relationship with Agyness Deyn, the Manchester supermodel with the Jedward quiff. Even as The Rascals struggled to draw a crowd, the paparazzi were declaring open season on him because of who hed been seeing. More than once he popped out for milk to find photographers literally snapping at his heels.

You start seeing Agyness Deyn for a bit, shes a great girl, youre a lad having a buzz, he says. Was it weird? Maybe little moments. But I feel different to the person I was then. Ive changed a lot.

Having split from Deyn and with Turner otherwise occupied, he sank into a funk. A week on the couch playing Fifa stretched into six months and he started to wonder if hed ever pick up a guitar again. Then his manager called with a proposal: would he consider writing some songs with Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals?

I thought, fuck it, Im going to do it on my own. When Im not making Shadow Puppets records, it will be just me. Going into the studio with Gruff was fantastic. When I was 14, 15, the Super Furry Animals were one of my favourite bands. They were the first group I went to see. I came home wearing a T-shirt about four sizes too big for me. My mum says I was never the same afterwards. What I learned off that guy… I cant speak highly enough of him.

It was at that point that Noel Gallagher entered the story, though Kane is distinctly cagey about the subject. As is his record label, a representative of which politely requests we not go overboard on the Noel questions, no matter that his guitar solo on My Fantasy is a highlight of Kanes LP. Chatting to Miles before Christmas, the singer was happy to discuss their collaboration.

Today, in contrast, he is crestfallen when Noels name is mentioned. Its as if youve asked what colour Y-fronts hes wearing.

Why so circumspect? It appears Kane created a bit of cyberspace kerfuffle after he let slip he had guested on Noels hush-hush solo album, the existence of which remains a subject of wild conjecture. Confirming Noel was working on a record was apparently tantamount to tweeting the third secret of Fatima, and Kane has had to do some backpedalling.

No offence to you, but the media blow these things out of the water, he says. All it is is that one song. He came down when we were mixing. We had a coffee and a KitKat. That was it. Its been built out of all proportion. I dont really know him that well. Ive only met him a couple of times. But that was a great afternoon, one that Ill cherish.

If anything hes friendlier with Liam, who hand-picked Kane to support his new band, Beady Eye, on their inaugural jaunt around the UK. In what seems to be a recurring theme in Kanes life and career, their first meeting was a bit haphazard.

Id only met him once, falling around the bar. We had a chat and got on. Hed heard a few songs and asked me to do the tour. It was a great honour. Hed come and watch me every night from the side. Im chuffed. Not to compare myself to Oasis, but theyve been a big part of my life. You grew your hair to look like them. I think they can appreciate that you are following in their footsteps.

Growing up on the outskirts of Merseyside, he received an early introduction to the music business when two of his cousins formed scally rockers The Coral. Seeing family members in the rock press and on television convinced him a career in the industry was within his reach.

It was amazing. Youd go watch them in a little bar in Liverpool and they would be wild. Those were the early days, before their first album. They were rocking out, it blew my mind. Obviously theyve calmed down now and they dont get into it as much, though a part of you wishes they did.

Sitting twitchily on the couch, Kane presents a more stylish figure than your average rumpled Britrocker. In a figure-hugging suit jacket and pants, brogues gleaming beneath the table, he could saunter straight into a GQ photoshoot. Actually, he has appeared in the UK edition of that very magazine, discussing his favourite clothing labels. Arent musicians supposed to find the callow world of fashion beneath them?

Ive always loved clothes. It started with Oasis when I was in school. Then, you got into The Strokes — you grew your hair and had a leather jacket. It was even more important on this record. I wanted to have this cool, suave image to go with it. I love Serge Gainsbourg, his whole look. It comes down to be being like the Gallaghers or Paul Weller — looking sharp and playing great music.

The album Colour of the Trap is released next Friday

Local animal rescue helps furry animals

A great deal of Chevys Fresh Mex customers celebrated April Fools Day by donating 25 percent of their total food ticket to the largest no-kill cat and dog sanctuary in California.

The Cat House on the Kings is a non-profit corporation that houses cats and dogs in an open environment over 12 acres. The sanctuary also serves as an adoption center.

Volunteer Kelly Jones helped organize the event, and she said she was pleased to see groups of people giving their time and Friday evening to help the animals.

“We are known throughout the world and take in animals from Hong Kong to Saudi Arabia,” Jones said. “There is no one like us in the United States.”

The River Park restaurant greeted customers during business hours, and were pleased to donate a portion of the customer’s bill toward The Cat House on the Kings.

“Chevys general manager Orlando Jr. donates a generous 25 percent to non-profits for events,” Jones said. “Also, it is a family friendly restaurant with great tasting food, average prices and a big heart to help out the community.”

Donations will go toward several different areas of need for the cats and dogs. Cats are allowed to roam inside of the five-bedroom house or wander outside and climb through trees.

“We were under our goal for the evening, but still raised $400 plus — which will help feed half of the cat house animals for one day,” Jones said.

If you missed the opportunity to visit Chevys last week, there are still several ways to help The Cat House on the Kings.

I’m one of the many people who donate $15 a month to an adult cat from The Cat House on the Kings. One-time donations are also welcomed in any amount. Scoopable litter, cat or dog canned-food, bedding, bleach, paper towels or pine cleaner are also some items on their wish list.

According to the mission statement on The Cat House on the Kings website, “Our mission is to place rescued cats and kittens into loving, permanent homes; to provide a safe, happy and healthy home for unwanted cats and kittens in a unique, no-cage facility; to prevent pet overpopulation through spaying and neutering; and to educate the public about responsible pet ownership.”

Jones said that Fresno is the third largest city with the highest euthanasia rate. The Cat House on the Kings vaccinates every animal for the remainder of their lives, and they also spay and neuter every animal that comes through the door.

“Here in the Valley alone 70,000 animals are euthanized every 12 months on average, and could have been prevented if animals were spayed and neutered,” Jones said.

Jones added that they do trades and animal exchanges in order to prevent euthanasia in shelters.

In addition to saving the lives of more than 18,000 cats and 5,000 dogs over the past 19 years, The Cat House on the Kings was on an Animal Planet TV series “Must Love Cats.” The host John Fulton travels to different regions across the United States; and The Cat House on the Kings was added recently to the west coast list.

People who want to open their hearts to animals, but may not have the room to house a pet for life, can foster a litter of kittens until they’re old enough to be adopted.

Two kittens lived with me over winter break 2009. I was responsible for their growth by feeding them and giving them a warm and loveable environment to live in. The two kittens only stayed with me for a month, but I hope I made a lasting impression in their young lives.

“It just takes one litter to create euthanasia for 10-plus healthy and young or even older animals to be put down at the SPCA,” Jones said. “Don’t breed or buy while shelter animals die.”

If you’re looking for a furry companion, look no further than The Cat House on the Kings — located in Parlier, Calif. on Kings River Road.

Rhode Island board disciplines six doctors, 1 for Facebook post

Rhode Island board disciplines six doctors, 1 for Facebook post

09:14 AM EDT on Tuesday, April 19, 2011

By Thomas J. Morgan

Journal Staff Writer

PROVIDENCE A physician who posted information on Facebook that allowed the identification of a patient, and another who has problems with alcohol and marijuana, are among six doctors who have been disciplined by the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline.

The board found Alexandra Thran, of Westerly Hospital, guilty of unprofessional conduct after she recounted some of her emergency-room experiences on Facebook, according to a news release by the state Department of Health. The board said she did not use the names of patients, and did not intend to disclose confidential information, but the nature of the injuries of one patient allowed an unauthorized third party to figure out who it was, the board ruled.

The panel said that Thran deleted her account as soon as she learned what had happened. The board issued a reprimand and told Thran to pay a $500 administrative fee.

In another case, the board suspended the license of Yogesh B. Pancholi, who practiced in walk-in centers and had been authorizing patients to apply for medical marijuana cards from the state Department of Health.

The board said that Pancholi in 2007 was diagnosed as abusing alcohol and marijuana, and that later he had been involuntarily admitted to a hospital for evaluation.

The panel charged that Pancholi acquired substances over the Internet that were designed to provide false negative readings for substance abuse monitoring. Pancholi also had been under board investigation for drug diversion and for inappropriate prescribing of medications.

The board said that the Physician Health Committee had instructed Pancholi to cease teaching people how to grow marijuana, a practice he had advertised in a local magazine and for which he charged cash.

The panel said also that Pancholi had abandoned some records, including the names of his medical marijuana patients, which were found by his landlord.

The board said the suspension would remain in effect until further action by the board.

In another case, the board issued a reprimand to Ira H. Asher, who has privileges at South County Hospital and Kent Hospital, for operating on the wrong eye in December 2009. A nurse caught the error before the surgery began, but after Asher had injected an anesthetic at the wrong site.

He performed the surgery on the correct eye, the board said, and the patient was discharged the same day.

Joseph Latina, who practices at Rhode Island Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital, received a reprimand and agreed to further education in surgical technique after he lacerated a blood vessel during a gall bladder operation.

The panel said the injury was a rare complication, one avoidable with careful techniques. The board said Latina failed to follow proper procedures, constituting unprofessional conduct.

Eric S. Bresher has been admonished by the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners, the Rhode Island panel reported, for failing to detect a mass in a patients abdomen. The Colorado panel said it intended no further action against Breshers license.

Bresher agreed to pay a $500 administrative fee to the Rhode Island board.

The board accused a retired doctor, Pasquale Mastrostefano, of unprofessional conduct in handling patient records. The board said Mastrosefano had been practicing at 347 Broadway, Providence, when he retired in April last year.

Mastrostefano tried to reach his patients by phone and by a newspaper advertisement, the panel said, then shredded the records of those who failed to respond after a two-week period. Some patients therefore were unable to obtain their medical records, the board said.

The board did not list any further sanctions.

ISL disciplines Lawrence Academy

By Bob Holmes, Globe Staff

Lawrence Academy was stripped of its last two Independent School League football titles and prohibited from appearing in the postseason for the next three years, part of six penalties imposed on the Groton school by the ISL Tuesday.

??The seriousness of the sanctions we have imposed reflects our commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of our student-athletes,?? said a letter composed by the 16 ISL schools and confirmed by Groton School headmaster and committee chairman Rick Commons.

The Spartans went 8-0 in the regular season and won their second straight Independent School League title last fall, but the success created controversy. In October, St. George?s forfeited its game with Lawrence Academy, citing safety concerns. The forfeit made national news. As Lawrence Academy rolled through its regular-season schedule, the focus wasn?t on a great season put together by talented students but of a school that had to be doing something wrong to achieve that success.

In a November story in the Globe, coach Mike Taylor spoke of the scrutiny and criticism his players were taking. LA?s season ended with a 24-21 loss to Salisbury in a NEPSAC postseason bowl. In February Taylor resigned as head coach and until Tuesday, it appeared the controversy was over.
