Police arrest suspected getaway driver

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News Police have now arrested a man officers say helped another rob a bank on March 28 and drove the getaway vehicle.

Lou Thurston, with the Newport News Police Department, told WAVY.com officers were dispatched to the Old Point National Bank located at 1134 Warwick Blvd. just after 9 am for a report of a bank robbery.

According to Thurston, the suspect entered the bank and displayed a handgun upon approaching the teller area. He demanded money and fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No one was hurt, and only employees were inside the bank. At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing a traffic vest and a gray watch cap.

Thurston said tips received from the Crime Line led detectives to 51-year-old William Raymond Taylor, of the 300 block of Hungate Circle in Newport News shortly after the robbery.

Monday, Thurston said a second suspect, William McClyde Heckstall, Jr., of Elizabeth City has been arrested by police and is now facing two counts of robbery and two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony. Detectives determined Heckstall was driving the getaway vehicle Taylor used during the bank robbery, Thurston said.

Taylor is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, entering a bank while armed with the intent to commit larceny, conspiracy to commit a felony, robbery (two counts), abduction (four counts) and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony (five counts).

Both are being held at the Newport News City Jail and the case remains under investigation.

Culloty hoping to Lord it

Lord Windermere is one of the more interesting contenders among the 26 entries for the Coolmore National Hunt Sires Ask Getaway Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse on Sunday.

Jim Cullotys six-year-old impressed twice over timber before finishing fourth in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse in mid-February, and returned to winning ways in fine style at Naas a month ago.

Champion trainer Willie Mullins has a predictably strong hand in the Grade Two contest, with Earls Quarter joined by stablemates Laganbank, Pickapocketortwo, Terminal and Turban.

County Hurdle winner Alderwood could come back to novice company for Tom Mullins, while other players include Lyreen Legend, Jenari and Dedigout.

Noel Meade could run Ipsos Du Berlais, a winner at Punchestown in January but pulled up at Cheltenham in the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle.

Mead said: He does need a bit of ease in the ground and we probably wont run him unless its soft, well just have to monitor the situation.

He got bottled up coming past the stands (at Cheltenham), we dont know why, but he has come back well and is in good form.

Fuel fears put dampener on traditional Easter getaway

TRAVEL delays caused by the traditional Easter getaway were consigned to the past as holidaymakers either jetted off to the sun or opted for day-cations against a back drop of fuel fears and wintry conditions.

‘Inept’ Lincolnshire thieves attempt 30mph ‘getaway’ in stolen tractor

Lincoln Crown Court was also told that the theft of the 30mph top speed tractor was aborted and all five men were caught because their getaway vehicle was registered to the brothers business and another van at the scene was hired in one of their names.

Brothers Richard, 46, David, 41, and Steven Hughes, 32, had recruited employee Mark Redfern, 38, and friend Gavin Prescott, 28, to help after being pressurised into the amateurish theft by a gang of travellers.

But their hopeless plan soon went wrong when they had to abandon the JCB tractor close to the yard in Corringham after they were chased by car driver Simon Caswell, who had called police.

Two of the men were seen jumping out of the tractor into a waiting 4×4 vehicle after they panicked and realised they could not outrun Mr Caswell in his car.

The 4×4 getaway vehicle was quickly found to be registered to a business run by the Hughes brothers, the court was told.

Witnesses to the June 15 incident last year also described seeing a white van pulling up outside the premises.

Two men were seen to approach Peacock and Binningtons , and two men approaching the entrance gate covered by a blanket as they cut open the lock.

The vehicle had been rented out in the name of Steven Hughes in his home town of Doncaster earlier the same day and was also caught on camera entering Gainsborough.

Other witnesses also identified David Hughes acting as an obvious lookout at the packed Beckett Arms pub before the tractor was driven out of the yard which belonged to agricultural machinery dealers Peacock and Binnington.

Andrew Scott, prosecuting, told the court: The execution of their plan was quite frankly amateurish.

The court heard the Hughes brothers had been forced to sell off their own plant hire business after suffering years of threats and intimidation at the hands of travelling criminals.

In mitigation, the court was told the Hughes brothers had no financial motive of their own for the theft and reluctantly recruited their friends after being visited by four travellers.

All five men admitted the theft which occurred on 15 June, last year.

Sentencing the men to suspended jail terms Judge Sean Morris told them it was clear this had not been a professional job.

This was the most inept, cack-handed theft, Judge Morris said. It was in broad daylight, it was performed in front of an audience within yards of what was going on.

The getaway vehicle was registered to the Hughes own company and the van was hired in Steven Hughes own name.

Richard Hughes of Doncaster Road, Bawtry, and Steven Hughes of Elm Close, Doncaster, were sentenced to nine months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Mark Redfern of Reeves Way, Armthorpe, and Gavin Prescott of Greenacres Close, Dunsville, Doncaster, were sentenced to six months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to carrry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community.

David Hughes of Westminster Crescent, Doncaster, was sentenced to six months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.

A Getaway To Palm Springs And Coachella Valley

Here are the things I needed when planning a girls getaway for with my sister and her daughter: Sunshine, proximity to the Pacific Northwest and a sophisticated but kid-friendly atmosphere. So we packed our bags for Palm Springs. Upon landing at LAX, we picked up a BMW 6-series convertible, which I planned to review for work. This beautiful 2012 stunner fit perfectly with the theme of our trip. I was happy with the driving dynamics and the amazing gas mileage; my sister felt safe, stylish and was glad that my nieces booster seat fit easily in the back and my niece was happy as a clam even with the top down.

When driving from LA to Palm Springs, the Desert Hills Oulets are a must…. Unfortunately it was snowing when we got to Cabazon (thats right, snowing), so we kept our visit brief, as we were dressed for 70-plus degree weather, not snow. So we continued on to Palm Springs, stopping at Maracas Mexican for lunch (reliable, quick, tasty and they offer skinny margaritas to counterbalance the steak nachos). Then we popped into a few open houses (were always window shopping!) and checked into the Colony Palms Hotel. Although I would not choose this hotel for children, its a lovely choice for adults. (But kids may request to stay there, since The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence recently did.) The outdoor seating areas and colonial decor are what really make this hidden oasis special. From the outside it doesnt look like much, but once inside, its lush, private and relaxing. We took some champagne out to the fire pit to enjoy the outdoors without getting too cold. Other plusses: incredibly comfortable beds, mini-bar area thats well stocked with drinkware, great bathroom amenities from CO Bigelow and free coffee and newspapers by the pool in the morning.

The next day the weather was more what we had in mind, so we started the day with a hike. Thats one of my favorite things about the Coachella Valley–there are plenty of hikes to suit varying levels. Then it was time to head east 10 miles to the Palm Desert/Rancho Mirage/Indian Wells/La Quinta side of the Valley. This is the next area to develop. Whereas Palm Springs became a fashionable getaway for Hollywood types in the 1920s, Palm Desert saw its boom later in the mid century era. So we headed to Rancho Las Palmas resort in Rancho Mirage (after a mandatory stop at In N Out for lunch, that is). After quickly touring the beautifully groomed grounds, we walked over to Splashtopia, the waterpark with slides, a river equipped with innertubes for lazing/floating, and parked ourselves with magazines, cocktails and SPF. For dinner, we ate at the resorts Blu Ember, which I would recommend if you dont want to leave the grounds, but for the price, I would say venture elsewhere.

The food scene in the Coachella Valley is — for lack of a better word — unique. There are lots and lots of chains, plenty of delicious Mexican places, and a few good local spots nestled into strip malls. Often the best dining is at hotels and resorts (I had a memorable meal at the Riviera a few years ago) and there are plenty of LA and New York outposts (such as Normas) to keep visitors feeling at home. If anyone has restaurant suggestions, by all means, please share them below! Or any other tips for enjoying the valley; with the Coachella Music Festival around the corner (starts April 13), its prime party time in the desert.

Hill Country getaway: The best place in Texas to see bluebonnets, rare birds …

Its a central Texas tradition; somewhere between the winter dormancy of our landscape and when the heat turns unbearable for months on end a brief span of time otherwise known as spring everyone is abuzz with wildflower sightings. For a few weeks, the days are glorious and the nights still crisp, no one can stay inside for long, and the Hill Country is ablaze with its vibrant profusion of native blossoms.

This year is a particularly lush wildflower season, after last years drought. And nowhere is the spring tradition more in full bloom than around Burnet, officially recognized by the Texas legislature as the Bluebonnet capital of Texas. In fact, Travel + Leisure Magazine named this area No. 1 of Americas Best Spring Drives.

At Canyon of the Eagles, a unique resort off Highway 29, there are 940 acres of hiking trails that come complete with their own expert botanist and birding guides to help you identify both wildflowers and wildlife.

Top destination

With 62 comfortable lodge rooms with all amenities as well as campgrounds and RV hookups, the fabulous Overlook Restaurant, numerous activities and even its very own observatory, Canyon of the Eagles is a top Hill Country destination. The food by executive chef Sean Huitt is fresh and inventive; dont miss the Eagles Nest breakfast dish, one of the best Ive had anywhere with an incredible sauce that Huitt will not divulge the secret to.

The private nature park, located on land owned by LCRA, offers 14 miles of groomed hiking trails; although during bird nesting season from March to August, up to 70 percent of those trails are closed to people. Roughly 800 of its acres are home to three endangered species: the American bald eagle, the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo.

We value the birds over the people, explains Bill Gibson, a naturalist guide at Canyon of the Eagles. Gibson, along with other naturalists and biologists, are on hand to guide guests in exploring the incredible nature of the park.

Most weekends there are regular presentations such as the Shake, Rattle and Coil reptile show, Scales, Tails and Shells aquatic demonstration, and seasonal Owl Prowl.

Outside of the nature, which is plentiful and fascinating, there are also plenty of other activities at Canyon of the Eagles. You can get out on the water in a kayak with the on-site Buchanan Adventure Tours, or go fishing for bass and striper with sports fishing guides Ray or Clancy. At night, there is often live music or movies under the stars.

And speaking of stars, Canyon of the Eagles boasts one very impressive observatory. Away from the lights of the city, the Austin Astronomical Society operates the Eagle Eye Observatory where two massive, research-grade telescopes are housed beneath a roof that slides open to the night skies. Regular star parties are held, and tables dot the land around the observatory for visitors to set their own telescopes or computers for stargazing, with AC outlets.

When afforded a clear night with good transparency the universe comes to life, says AAS president Dawn Davies.

Other things to do in the area

I highly recommend a boat ride on Lake Buchanan with Vanishing Texas River Cruise, whose guides are a wealth of knowledge on not only the native and migratory birds, wildlife and geography, but also the history of the area. Lake Buchanan is the largest lake in Texas and is home to a myriad of water fowl and birds of all kinds.

The cruise will pass by Garrett Island, the largest uninhabited island on the lake. It is a wildlife sanctuary for migratory birds such as the blue heron, white egrets and particularly two birds of prey, the osprey and the American Bald Eagle.

Also interesting, while the lake is at record low water levels, is a visit to the remains of a town called Bluffton. Abandoned in 1937 when the Colorado River was dammed and flooded to create Lake Buchanan, the ghost town has been buried in an underwater grave ever since. But with the lake still 30% below its normal depth, the site of Bluffton has re-emerged as a sandbar that Vanishing Texas River Cruise can take you to, with a guide to explain the haunting ruins that youll find.

If youre really into adventure sports, head to nearby Reveille Peak Ranch, a 1,300-acre outdoor event, adventure and education center that offers trail running, Cross Fit challenges, marathons and other events, and top-notch mountain biking with miles of pump and flow tracks and a true downhill skills park. There are water sports as well, such as fishing and canoeing, and RPR is really dedicated to youth education in fitness and the outdoors.

I became convinced that certain parts of the Texas Hill Country would be ideally suited to grape growing, says Ed Auler of Fall Creek Vineyards.

We want to get the next generation out from behind their screens and building healthy habits for life, says owner Vol Montgomery.

If youre more into letting another do most of the hard work, get on horseback for a trail ride at Colbert Ranch in Bertram. The ranch is owned by a retired attorney and his horse-loving wife, who started offering horseback tours to visitors in order to cover the overhead of caring for her beloved equine family. From complete novice to experienced riders, it offers a beautiful ride, much of it shaded, along the San Gabriel River (which you cross a couple of times), through woods and wildflower meadows, and along a ridge.

And when all this nature and activity has you craving some civilized refreshment, make your way to Fall Creek Vineyards. The Hill Country is known for its wineries, and the location of Fall Creek on the shore of Lake Buchanan creates the perfect microclimate for many grape varieties, due to the cool breeze coming in off the water and over the vines.

Established in 1975 by Texas businessman/rancher Ed Auler and his wife, Susan, the Fall Creek wines came about almost by accident. Ed was looking for an additional business to supplement his cattle ranching; Susan suggested they take a trip to France to look at wines. Ed agreed, with his primary intent being to check out French cattle for cross-breeding. But when he realized the comparable soil and climate of Central Texas, he was quickly bitten by the wine bug, and the rest is history.

I became convinced that certain parts of the Texas Hill Country would be ideally suited to grape growing, says Ed.

Walking through Fall Creek Vineyards, you might as well not even bother to count the hundreds of ribbons and awards that line the walls. Take a tour of the vineyard, learn about the Aulers wine-making process, and enjoy a wine tasting. The Meritus and Chardonnay are particularly popular, with many hailing the Meritus as the best Texas wine available.

Wildflower season is relatively brief in Texas, so now is the time to get out to Hill Country and enjoy it. But even after the wildflowers are gone, Canyon of the Eagles and the surrounding area make for one truly fine Texas getaway.
