Lee College will host the first of six Project LeeWay orientation sessions on Wednesday, May 18.

Prospective adult students interested in pursuing their education will have an opportunity to learn more about the programs available through Project LeeWay, which was established in 1992 to assist low-income students seeking non-traditional careers. Single parents, displaced homemakers and single, pregnant women can gain access to vocational and technical education and training at Lee College.

Program components include career exploration, study skills, surviving transition, job search assistance and support services such as child care, transportation assistance, financial aid resource identification and tutoring. The program helps students take advantage of educational opportunities that may have once seemed inaccessible.

Students interested in participating in the Project LeeWay program are required to attend one orientation session. These two-hour sessions will be held each Wednesday afternoon from May 18 through June 22. Typical orientation sessions include a general overview of the program, testimonials from previous students and assistance with the admissions process.

At the end of the orientation session, a representative from the Lee College Educational Opportunities Center (EOC) visits with the prospective students to discuss the financial aid process. Afterward, students interested in participating in the program are able to schedule a follow-up session with the EOC during which they will apply for financial aid.

Project LeeWay orientation sessions will be held May 18, May 25, June 1, June 8, June 15 and June 22. Sessions go from 1 pm to 3 pm and are held in Room 115 of Technical Vocational Building 1 at Lee College, located at 200 Lee Drive in Baytown.

More than 150 community leaders recently attended the eighth annual PACE Center for Girls Broward Believing in Girls luncheon, which raised more than $38,000 to support the organizations counseling and academic services for girls, ages 11-17. The events full agenda included the introduction of the PACEsetters membership program, testimonials from three PACE girls and an announcement by Sheriff Al Lamberti.

PACE Broward Board Chair Mark Snead welcomed 90 individuals, corporations, foundations and civic organizations as founding members of PACEsetters, a new membership program that recognizes donors for contributions made throughout the year. Membership benefits include invitations to private member receptions and special programs with the girls.

As PACEsetters your contributions demonstrate your belief in our girls, said Snead. You are helping them realize their potential and build their futures.

The testimonies from the three PACE girls highlighted the luncheon when they courageously told their stories and talked about remarkable changes they have made as a result of the PACE program.

Keynote speaker Sheriff Al Lamberti commended the participants and graduates of PACE for their courage and commitment to making good life choices. Sheriff Lamberti reaffirmed his commitment and support of prevention and diversion services as a cost effective means to decreasing youth delinquency and crime which in turn provides for a safer community.

Penelope Blair and Linda Haury co-chaired the Believing in Girls Luncheon. The signature sponsor of the event was the Leo Goodwin Foundation, a long time major supporter of PACE. Other sponsors included Marti Huizenga/Huizenga Family Foundation; Citrix Systems, Inc.; Florida Shores Bank Southeast; Helen Furia; Philip Guerra; Yoss LLP Employees Charitable Trust Foundation, Inc.; The Self Storage Depot; and Womens Executive Club.

Established in 1992 PACE Broward has helped more than 1,700 girls find success in school, generate positive relationships with their families and peers, and become productive members of the community.
