Swimming lowers older adults’ blood pressure

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Many older adults like to take a dip a pool, and now a small study suggests it can be good for their blood pressure.

Researchers found that among 43 older men and women, those who started swimming a few times a week lowered their systolic blood pressure — the top number in a blood pressure reading.

On average, the swimmers started the study with a systolic blood pressure of 131 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Three months later, it was 122 mm Hg.

Normal blood pressure is defined as an average reading no higher than 120/80 mm Hg. Readings of 140/90 or higher are considered high blood pressure, and anything in between is considered pre-hypertension.

Swimming is often promoted as a good way for older people to exercise, since its easy on the joints and its not likely to cause overheating. And many follow that advice: after walking, swimming is the second-most popular form of exercise among the older set.

But theres been little research into the health benefits of swimming — though a number of studies have suggested that its as safe for older adults as walking and bicycling, said Hirofumi Tanaka, senior researcher on the new study.

Published in the American Journal of Cardiology, the research appears to be the first to demonstrate that swimming can improve older adults blood vessel function and curb their blood pressure.

Swimming is a very attractive form of exercise, Tanaka, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, told Reuters Health in an email.

Its easily accessible and inexpensive, Tanaka noted. And because it does not involve bearing of body weight, due to the buoyancy of water, it is friendly to knee and ankle joints.

The study included 43 adults, with an average age of 60, who had high blood pressure or pre-hypertension but were otherwise healthy.

The researchers randomly assigned them to either have supervised swimming sessions or learn relaxation exercises. Over 12 weeks, the swimmers got in the pool three or four times a week, gradually working their way up to 45 minutes of swimming at a time.

By the end of the study, the swimmers had shaved an average of nine points from their systolic blood pressure. In contrast, that number did not budge in the relaxation group.

The picture was similar when the researchers had the study participants wear portable monitors that tracked their blood pressure over 24 hours. On average, the swimming group had a 24-hour systolic blood pressure of 119 mm Hg — down from 128 mm Hg at the studys start.

Tanakas team also used ultrasound tests to measure how well participants blood vessels were dilating in response to blood flow. Again, they found improvements in the swimming group, but not in the relaxation group.

The study was small, and its not clear whether the blood pressure reduction lasts — or whether it translates into a lower risk of heart attack or stroke down the line.

But the results line up with what experts already recommend for older adults heart health: get regular moderate exercise, along with a healthy diet.

Tanaka said that as long as an older adult has gotten the OK to exercise moderately, swimming should be a safe activity. But if youre sedentary, check with your doctor before becoming newly active.

There was a time when swimming was considered potentially risky, Tanaka noted, because being in cold water elicits cardiovascular changes.

But most studies have indicated that bobbing in the waters of your local pool would be as safe as a walk around the neighborhood.

This marks BeBevCos largest retail partnership to date, according to a company announcement.

In these stressful times, the demand for relaxation beverages is growing and now KOMA Unwind Products are arriving in Georgia, said BeBevCo CEO Brian Weber.

Flash Foods of Georgia, a self-distributor through Distribution South, has operated since 1952. It distributes its own grocery products and fuel using its own transports internally or through subsidiaries of The Jones Co.

"Golden Touch Relaxation Center" front for prostitution

ATTICA, Ind. (WLFI) – The investigation continues into an alleged prostitution operation in Fountain County.

The Golden Touch Relaxation Center stands in a somewhat remote portion of US 41 in Fountain County, a few miles south of Attica.

For the time being, the open sign will remain off after a raid by police that points to illegal activity.

“We executed that search warrant about 6:00 pm at the relaxation center and recovered several adult sex toys, some coded names on ledgers and stuff like that,” said Attica police chief Bobby Bass.

Bass said among the more incriminating evidence are ledger cards with coded client names.

Stop in at almost any popular Attica gathering and most people will tell you they knew something was a little off about the so-called massage parlor.

“Kind of knew what was going on. You know it wasnt nothing out of the blue. Trailer out in the middle of the cornfield, someone trying to have their own massage parlor, it was kind of obvious,” said Carrigan.

Bass said he believes anywhere from 5-7 women were working at the relaxation center, now, he said, due to the nature of the items seized during the search, theres no doubt in his mind as to the true nature of the business.

“Talking to the employees, I believe the information that they gave us was very credible. And what we found during the search, I believe there was no reason to have those items in there if this was strictly a relaxation center or massage parlor,” said Bass.

Bass said the investigation is ongoing and several agencies are involved in the case at the moment.

He said the next step is to track the operations owner, who until this point has remained somewhat elusive.

Where should two busy moms travel for hiking, sightseeing and relaxation?

The Question: My best friend and I both busy moms want to take a trip to celebrate our 40th birthdays. We want hiking, sightseeing and relaxation, too.

If youre looking for an urban escape, consider places like Vancouver, New York or Paris. You can walk your feet off, take in the cultural sights, admire the scenery and then linger over locavore meals, interruption-free. (Imagine that!) But for the Big 40, you might long for something more distinct. Jessica Ainlay, who explores the world as one half of GlobetrotterGirls (globetrottergirls.com), has these suggestions:

Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific Coast meets your criteria if wildlife and natural beauty is on your sightseeing agenda. Youll find cliffside rooms with a sweeping view of the beach, jungles filled with black iguanas, three-toed sloths and purple-crowned fairy hummingbirds.

The national park would be the main place to hike, says Ainlay, who visited 11 countries last year, including Costa Rica. Its easy and is filled with animals: Sightings of monkeys and sloth, coatis, exotic birds and many other animals are practically guaranteed. hellip; The hiking paths are all very scenic, leading through the lush jungle or following the coast line, including some remote beaches.

After all that, relax at your ocean-view swimming pool or spa. Theres a range of accommodation, but Parador Resort and Spa (hotelparador.com), Gaia Hotel and Reserve (gaiahr.com) and Issimo Suites (issimosuites.com) have all garnered notice for those looking to splurge, Ainlay says.

Southern Germany

If you favour beer steins over beaches, consider southern Bavaria in the foothills of the Alps. This is a land of fairy-tale castles, traditional spa towns and air so fresh you try to gulp it in by the bucketful, Ainlay says.

She suggests basing yourself in the small and historic town of Fuessen (fuessen.de), a two-hour train ride from Munich.

There are a number of different paths from easy strolls through the river valley to serious hikes through the mountains. You can actually walk from Fuessen to Neuschwanstein Castle alongside the Alps. No matter how strenuous the hikes, a stay at a spa hotel like Wellnesshotel Sommer (hotel-sommer.de) will relax the muscles and the mind.

Or capture your birthday moment atop Germanys highest mountain, Zugspitze. Located about an hour from Fuessen, you can hike up (and ski down in the winter) or take a heart-pumping ride in a cable car that literally zips to the top.
