American GhoulsMetta World Peace, Ray Easterling, and our appetite for sanctioned violenceBy Charles P. Pierce on April 30, 2012

PRINT

It is devoutly to be hoped that, when the artist formerly known as Artest comes back from his seven-game enforced vacation for going upside the noggin of James Harden, the return of Metta World Peace simply will be treated as that of a guy who did something stupid, got caught, and got punished. It is devoutly to be hoped that the whole episode will not be treated as A Teachable Moment for the rest of us, and wont somebody please think of the children, please? It is devoutly to be hoped that there will be little of the prattle about What This Means To Us Going Forward. And Ill pay anyone a shiny buffalo nickel if they dont mention kids in the way they dress and their rap music.

This is not to say that I think that nothing in sports ever has anything to tell us about the greater world in which we all live, work, and try to keep the gang on Wall Street from stealing all of whats left of our money. If you know where — and, more important, how — to look, then it was in the context of our games that you could get a clearer and more honest view of race, and class, and the effect of the rise of mass media, to name only a few of the important issues of the past 100 years. My problem is that I would almost guarantee you that the lessons we will be told we should draw from the MWP episode almost assuredly will be all the wrong ones. They will address the lessons society should draw from sports. The real lessons should be those that sports now have to learn from society.

The sports-entertainment complex now is coming dangerously close to demanding for itself the right to set itself up as a sanction-free zone for legitimized violence.

Over the past couple of weeks, weve had a serious and ongoing reminder that this country needs to rethink the relationship it has with its sports-entertainment complex, and a serious and ongoing reminder that the sports-entertainment complex has the same obligation that any individual — and that any corporation, since our Supreme Court in its infinite wisdom has explained to us that they are people, too — has to our society. It is not entirely far removed from the primary obligation that all physicians accept when they take their oath — first, do no harm. The sports-entertainment complex now is coming dangerously close to demanding for itself the right to set itself up as a sanction-free zone for legitimized violence. They appear to want an exemption from even the loosest codes that we have regarding the deliberate infliction of pain and suffering. And a great chunk of society seems prepared to grant them precisely that.

There was the MWP episode. Before that, there was the suicide of former Atlanta Falcons safety Ray Easterling, which may make Easterling the latest casualty of the National Football Leagues decades-long crimes of omission against its players. And weve already had an NHL playoff season that, for all the marvelous tension of the Boston-Washington series, looks more and more like something the MMA would dream up for the May sweeps. Each of these has been treated as an individual event with nothing in common with the other. But the evidence keeps piling up that they all share a common disregard for what legitimized violence can do to the people who participate in it. So much so that, when I accidentally channel-surfed past the eleventy-gazillion hours of live NFL draft coverage this weekend, it looked like nothing more than the debut of a new television game show: Who Wants To Be a Vegetable at 50?

While theres been some movement on the management side to address the problems that theyd been ignoring for 70 years, most of that has had to be shaken out of the various panjandrums in charge, and a lot of it seems to be largely cosmetic. And the pushback on that part of the remedies that seems genuine has been remarkable. The idea that anyone seriously would argue that the New Orleans Saints were treated too harshly for a bounty system that encouraged injuring opposing players is more than enough evidence that a more extensive job of reprogramming everyone invested in the sports-entertainment context is still needed. And the old answers about vicarious violence arent sufficient anymore. A society that needs its sports as a vehicle of vicarious violence so that actual violence doesnt break out at an angry time in its history is in deeper trouble than it can imagine.

The Easterling case is instructive in all of this. Ray Easterling had a good NFL career. By the time he was 62, he was depressed, showing signs of dementia, and, ultimately, successful in killing himself. He was also suing the NFL for what had happened to him in the course of his employment by the NFLs Atlanta franchise. There is no evidence that Ray Easterling ever did anything during his NFL career beyond the simple demands of his job as a defensive back. In the course of his employment, the eventual destruction of his ability to reason was an inevitable consequence of that employment. Ray Easterlings eventual dementia was as inevitable a result of the work he did for a living as black lung is for coal miners, or mesothelioma is for the people who work with asbestos. That this simple fact is obscured by an affection the country has for its football is a symptom of a country that has let that affection compromise its moral bearings.

We ought not to allow people to be destroyed — either all at once, or one concussion at a time — for our amusement. Doing so makes us amoral. Hell, it makes us vampires. We ought to demand that the people who run our sports take better care of the lives and health of our fellow citizens that those industries employ. One of the things that Ray Easterling did before he took his own life was join one of the 61 lawsuits filed against the National Football League by more than 1,260 former NFL players. If we want to get our love for sports back into balance with our interest in our common humanity, here are some things that we can demand:

We can demand that the NFL not fight any of these suits.

We can demand that the NFL enter into settlement discussions right now with every single plaintiff, and that it does so with humility and with an eye toward making these people whole.

We can demand that the NFL not hide behind legalisms, or behind its formidable PR apparatus, or behind the fact that, God help them, many of the plaintiffs may end up dead before their cases are ever adjudicated.

We can demand that it pay up, and that it be forced to allocate — as they used to say on Law amp; Order — to its complicity in the physical and mental destruction of people whom it was morally and ethically obligated to protect.

There will be people who maintain that NFL players signed on to be cogs in a machine when they signed their initial contracts. There is a libertarian argument that will be made about allowing people to take their own risks with their own bodies. There will be some boohooing about the involvement of politics in our entertainment. Standing against these concerns is the simple fact that we all owe each other a debt as members of a political and social commonwealth not to profit from the pain and suffering of each other, no matter who inflicts it or how accidental or deliberate that might be. It is time to regard our individual complicity in the circumstances that we allow to produce what happened to someone like Ray Easterling with a far more jaundiced eye than we ever have. You can enjoy football if you wish. I do. But I cant enjoy it blindly any more. I cant enjoy it with a clear conscience.

Over the past two decades, weve come around to the fact that not even the Roman Catholic Church can declare itself immune to the laws through which we civilize ourselves and each other. It took a lot of blood and tears and misery. It took the dismantling of a sanctified stone wall. It took a society that decided, through its institutions of self-government, that enough simply was enough. If we can make that decision on an actual religion, we ought to be able to make that decision on one of the countrys most prominent secular religions. Civilization isnt inevitable. It is a product. It is something we create with each other for each other. There are no exceptions to that rule.

That possibility is still there — the Sixers can put this thing away on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center with a win over the Bulls — but theres also the possibility now, remote as it seems, that the Sixers, after losing Game 5, could lose the series.

View Photo Gallery: Capitals force a Game 7, defeating the Rangers, 2-1, at Verizon Center.

End regulation: Gaborik’s shot deflects off Carlson with 50 seconds left to cut it to 2-1, robbing Holtby of his first career playoff shutout, but Caps win this one to force a Game 7 in New York Saturday.

Fans chanting “Holt-BY!”

Gotta run, but more to come in a bit.

19:05 3rd: Holtby makes his 30th save and his mom is barely keeping it together.

16:10 3rd: Caps take a timeout. 2:50 left to protect a 2-0 lead.

13:49 3rd: The crowd here is quiet and nervous. It can be a looooong 20 minutes when you’re trying to force a Game 7.

9:40 3rd, Neil: All Caps in the third’s first 10 minutes. Washington has four scoring chances (including one from Ovechkin in the lotus position) and the Rangers just two, both of those in the first four minutes.

5:20 3rd: Wow. Ovechkin almost just scored while sitting after getting taken down on the rush. He spun around and shot it but no luck. Still… cool.

2:16 3rd: Green whistled for a delay of gsame.

Int, Neil: New York had a 4:00 power play in the second period but Washington still generated more chances, 4-3, making it 11-7 in Caps favor through 40 minutes. Three different Caps have more than one scoring chance so far: Chimera (3), Ovechkin (2) and Aucoin (2).

Chimera has been great this game (goal, four shots and three chances). Hunter might want to try him out on the top line.

End 2nd: This is the longest the Caps have held onto a two-goal lead all postseason. They were up two against Boston in Game 5 for just 2:54 in an eventual 4-3 win.

Rangers lead in shots 20-17, but with nada to show for it, obviously.

17:04 2nd: Prust goes off for roughing and Caps get their third power play of the game.

13:30 2nd: Hendricks sets up Johansson in front of the net for a shorty but he misses it wide.

12:05 2nd: Halpern to the box for high-sticking, Rangers go to the man advantage for four minutes.

10:59 2nd: Most smug goal-scoring face ever from Jason Chimera, who just potted his fourth of the postseason. Assist from Carlson, who has three points in his last four games, but the play was set into motion by Semin, who battled Staal behind the net to free up the puck.

Capitals 2, Rangers 0.

8:50 2nd: On a dud of a power play, Caps get zero shots. Holtby doesn’t get a break, either, having to stop one short-handed attempt from Stepan.

6:29 2nd: Caps are unable to convert on several good chances by Aucoin, Halpern and Knuble but now they’ll get a power play as Callahan is whistled for tripping.

0:49 2nd: Caps are 2-for-2 on the PK now as the second period gets underway.

Int, Neil: Washington leads New York in scoring chances 7-4. Ovechkin has two (including a sweet power-play goal which is Exhibit A when someone asks “Why shouldn’t Ovi play the point with the man advantage?”) as does Chimera, whose speed is making life difficult for the Blueshirts. Brouwer, Semin and Backstrom have the other three.

Next goal feels really important, doesn’t it?

End 1st: Roman Hamrlik goes to the box for interference with 1:11 left. The Caps will have 49 seconds short handed to start the second period.

Up 1-0, they leave the ice to a huge standing ovation from the crowd here.

17:04 1st: After giving up two goals in its last time on the ice (who could forget?) the Caps’ penalty kill successfully extinguishes New York’s first power play.

Then during a TV timeout, Prust catches Ovechkin, um, below the belt, with his stick. Caps captain doubles over in pain but he’s skating it off.

13:44 1st: PK gets to work as Laich goes off for holding.

10:00 1st: Washington leads in scoring chances 5-2 through the game’s first 10 minutes with five different Caps getting in on the action.

7:28 1st: It’s early, but the Caps are applying a ton of offensive pressure. They’re up 8-3 in shots, which includes the Semin-Backstrom-Chimera line getting some quality chances on Lundqvist.

1:28 1st: In 15 seconds, while I’m still typing up the penalty, Ovechkin scores from the slot for his fifth goal of the playoffs. He’s now tied Peter Bondra (who is in the house tonight) with a franchise-best 30 career playoff goals.

Also, for what it’s worth, Washington is 6-1 when scoring first this postseason.

Capitals 1, Rangers 0.

1:15 1st: Stralman trips Chimera on his way to the net and Caps go to the power play early.

7:37 p.m.: Fans cheer extra loud as Joel Ward is announced as a starter. So yes, his Game 7 winner in overtime does, in fact, trump his ill-advised Game 6 penalty.

7:29, Katie: Jay Beagle may not be a household name outside of Washington but over the past few months he’s become a key part of Hunter’s system. While there are plenty of players who will pick up the slack, replacing his minutes won’t be easy for the Caps.

Beagle solidified a role as the Capitals’ shutdown center late in the regular season and has played that part throughout the playoffs, averaging 18 minutes, 26 seconds per game. Within that, though, Beagle sees important penalty-killing time and is fourth on the team (second among forwards) in average shorthanded ice time at 2:42 per game.

He also leads the Capitals with a 54 percent success rate on faceoffs (87 of 161) in the postseason. Beagle has taken the bulk of the right-side draws in the playoffs, but inserting faceoff wiz Jeff Halpern into the mix should help Washington out in that regard.

Beagle suffered an apparent injury to his right knee in Game 5 when he blocked a shot by New York defenseman Anton Stralman.

7:28 p.m.: By the way, if there’s a Game 7 in New York, it’ll be at 7:30 on NBC Sports Network.

7:15 p.m., Katie: The Capitals’ line rushes didn’t offer a clear picture of what the forward combinations will look like in Beagle’s absence.

They showed the top two lines as Ovechkin-Laich-Johansson and Chimera-Backstrom-Semin, but the third and fourth units were jumbled. They’ll be a combination of Matt Hendricks, Troy Brouwer, Jeff Halpern, Mike Knuble, Keith Aucoin and Joel Ward. How the Capitals will divvy up time between those players with Beagle out is uncertain, but Halpern will certainly be thrown back into the fire pretty quickly.

The defensive pairs looked the same as they have for some time now.
Alzner-Carlson
Hamrlik-Green
Schultz-Wideman

In net, Braden Holtby gets the nod and will be backed up by Michal Neuvirth.

7 p.m.: Caps are taking warmup and there’s no sign of Jay Beagle, who also missed the morning skate. The center, who limped to the bench after blocking a shot with his knee in the second period Monday night, must be pretty banged up if he’s not out there for an elimination game.

Coach Dale Hunter said this morning that Beagle was “fine” and would be in the lineup, but appears veteran Jeff Halpern could be taking his place. That would mark the Potomac native’s first game since March 23 vs. Winnipeg.

6:40 p.m.: Braden Holtby is doing is usual pregame “visualizations” on the bench, and Comcast’s got the camera trained on him. Associate goalie coach (and Caps legend) Olie Kolzig said the rookie netminder will have to cut back on some of those Holtbyisms next year, though, if he has his way. Such an extensive pregame routine can wear on a player and cause him to burn out, Kolzig said.

6:20 p.m., Neil: The lower seed has a slight advantage in Game 6, having won 28 of 55 games (.509) in the second round. Couple that with Henrik Lundqvist’s inability to eliminate the Caps (he is 0-3 with a 4.71 GAA and .810 save percentage – stick tap to J.P. from Japers’ Rink for the nugget) and you have a recipe for success.

Not into #fancystats or history? Then just fill-in-the-blank: Loss (Game 1), Win (Game 2), Loss (Game 3), Win (Game 4), Loss (Game 5), ___ (Game 6).

5:15 p.m.: Greetings from Verizon Center, where the Caps will be fighting to keep their postseason alive with a win over New York.

Having to win two games in a row is never an easy task, but with its recent history of resilience, Washington has plenty of reason to be optimistic.

We’ll have live updates, scoring chances/insight from stats guru Neil Greenberg and more to come. In the meantime, here’s some reading material to catch up on:

— Q&A transcript: Carrera and El-Bashir

— Rangers aren’t looking past tonight’s game

— Ovechkin: ‘We just can’t go home right now’

— Hunter: Beagle is ‘fine, he’s gonna play’

— Caps look to stave off elimination

We are very loud. I mean, text your friends sitting next to you because theywont be able to hear you, dont bother wearing earplugs because they wont do any good, lock up the small furry animals because the reverb will probably peel their fur off, call the police because laws will be broken loud. And thats just before the anthems get belted out.

We like shiny objects. And the Portland Winterhawks arent afraid to touch them. Many players consider it a supersition to touch things like the Western Conference trophy, as it will jinx their chances of winning the league title. I say the heck with that. You earned it, put your little mitts all over it. Feed it snacks. Take it out for an afternoon stroll. Stop by the Portland Winterhawks business office and pet it now and again. Whatever floats your boat. Touching a shiny object makes it real, and it makes believing that the next big shiny thing is real, too.

We love the Winterhawks for sentimental reasons. And we wont hesitate to show it. On Saturday, win, lose or draw we know for sure three of our players will play their last game in a Winterhawks jersey on home ice: Captain William Wrenn, Oliver Gabriel and Cam Reid. Four others are very likely off to the NHL next season: Sven Bartschi, Joe Morrow, Marcel Noebels and Brad Ross. And if the Colorado Avalanche get smart and sign him over the summer, Troy Rutkowski. Im sure they wont mind leaving behind early morning bus rides and bad Portland driving conditions, but I hope the boys will always remember that Portland fans showed them how to go out in style.

We love the Winterhawks, period. Sure, we like shiny things and we love scoreboards in our favor. Who doesnt? But there is one thing we love above all others, no matter what. 24, to be exact: the Portland Winterhawks themselves. They dont have to come here. They choose to. They leave their homes, their families, their friends, their high schools and whatever another life may have held to come here. On Saturday night, Portland fans will choose the Winterhawks. Im sure you feel the same way about your Oil Kings. There have been so many great Winterhawks moments to be proud of this season, its hard to pick just one. So I didnt. Here are just a few of my favorites:

– Cheering in a nearly standing room only rink when then-rookie Brendan Leipsic nailed a zinger on a penalty shot.

– Watching the replay after Brad Ross finally scored on a breakaway.

– Putting our jaws back in place after Sven Bartschi sets off whatever fireworks display he decides to put on.

– Attempting to keep track of Ty Ratties hat tricks, new franchise records and first player to whatever.

– Watching Captain William Wrenn lead the team in hoisting the Western Conference trophy.

Behind the great plays, the great goals and the great saves are great people, who for a short time, wereours. All ours. In the end, its not about that trophy that will travel to the Rose City for Saturdays game. Hockey is who we are, and the Winterhawks are who we love and what we believe in. So, Edmonton, Im sure you understand now why Portland is #allin, Saturday nightand always.

It is envisaged that the Rap Slam Competition will encourage youngsters to develop an interest in classical music by selecting a famous classical piece over which they will then create a rap. The competition will initially be conducted (no pun intended) via Twitter and Facebook and from there three finalists will be shortlisted to perform in an X-Factor style competition in the Talk Tent at the Orchestra in a Field on Sunday 1st July. Amongst others judging the performances will be Professor Green and Benny Banks as well as top rap agent Billy Wood.

The winner will then perform his/her winning entry live onstage at the festival with an introduction by Charles Hazlewood and Professor Green. (Rumour has it that Professor Green might also perform with Charles Hazlewood and his full orchestra!!)

Additionally the winner will also have the opportunity to air their piece live onstage at the Glastonbury Festival 2013 (which takes place between 26th and 30th June) and they will also spend a day recording in the studio of the Super Furry Animals in Cardiff, with production supervision by band member Cian Ciaran.

Charles Hazelwood said: People associate big orchestras with stuffy concert halls, and a lot of people are alienated by that image of classical music, ut take the music out of that setting, and its a revelation.

Imagine a brightly lit stage in the middle of a field at night, and the sheer sensory assault of a symphony orchestra at full tilt, plus soloists and a big chorus its an amazing spectacle, let alone the sound.

The Rap Slam competition has just been launched via Twitter (@rap_slam) and the Orchestra in a Field website.

Gershwin tributes are standard fare at pops concerts, but Thursday night’s “Gershwin Spectacular” with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops found new life in the old concept, and lived up to its title, by going multimedia.

During some sections of the program, a giant projection screen deployed quickly and noiselessly over the Symphony Hall stage. In the opening number, the orchestra accompanied a slideshow of iconic American scenes with Sid Ramin’s big-shouldered arrangement of Gershwin’s song Love is Sweeping the Country. The photographs, by Joseph Sohm, included eye-popping landscapes and cityscapes and heart-warming shots of furry animals and people cuddling each other, images guaranteed to raise the emotional temperature in the room.

Then up went the screen, and on came pianist Michael Chertock to perform Rhapsody in Blue with the orchestra. The show-style lighting — Chertock and his Steinway grand in a pool of light downstage, orchestra in the shadows behind–had the beneficial effect of helping the listener pick out the piano’s sound during the big tutti passages. Maybe the BSO should try that sometime with, say, the Sibelius Violin Concerto.

In the orchestral opening and the beginning of the first piano cadenza, the performance sounded a little polite, as if this was going to be a proper Bostonian version, a rhapsody in pale blue. But that turned out to be a ruse; Chertock turned the heat up higher and higher in his solo until the orchestra capped it by entering fortissimo, and the piece was off and running.

That was just the first of many well-executed musical effects that punctuated this performance. Often criticized for being episodic and slapped together by instinct (but what instinct!), Rhapsody in Blue seems to invite performers to hurry through it before the audience notices how scrappy it is structurally. Chertok and Lockhart took the opposite approach, lingering over every transition, every little weld, every change in harmonic and instrumental color.

With such a treatment, this piece could easily fall apart, but this performance made one aware not just of the brilliant piano writing and the beautiful melodies, but of Gershwin’s skill at stage-managing the whole, preparing the listener to hear each new idea.

There was a price to be paid for that, of course, in forward momentum; notably, the closing peroration felt tacked-on, like pulling one more trick out of the box, instead of the climax of an exciting rush of music. But overall, this was a fresh and rewarding take on a familiar classic.

An American in Paris was next–not just Gershwin’s orchestral piece, but the movie of the same name. That 1951 film, and especially its long final ballet to the Gershwin score, is a reminder of the dizzying heights of imagination Hollywood musicals reached in that era.

On Thursday night, Lockhart and the Pops blared out Gershwin’s splendid score as, on the big screen, Gene Kelly twirled and leaped through a surrealist Paris populated by dancing gendarmes, street hustlers, and Leslie Caron. Having to synchronize with the screen image meant Lockhart couldn’t be very spontaneous with the score, but his band played with admirable color and energy, and the sonic presence of live music with those indelible images made for a vivid experience indeed.

Gene Kelly in full Hollywood production mode is a hard act for anyone to follow, but eight game young singer-dancers from the Boston Conservatory Theater Division did just that in the evening’s last act. Performing on a small strip of stage in front of the orchestra, they led off in the Kelly surrealist spirit with a dance to Gershwin’s brief piece Promenade: Walking the Dog. While Pops principal clarinetist Thomas Martin chirped the jaunty solo, the dancers, wielding those joke dog leashes with an imaginary dog at the end, cleverly mimed getting pulled this way and that, with the inevitable tangles of leashes and bodies.

After that came more conventional fare–a torch song, a romantic duet, a plant-your-feet-and-belt number, a soft shoe, etc.–all winningly done to Gershwin songs both familiar (Fascinatin’ Rhythm, Embraceable You) and somewhat less so (By Strauss, Slap That Bass). It all went to show that, to succeed in American musical theater, ya gotta have heart–and these young performers did.

Some of these performances will be repeated at the Family Concert, 3 pm Saturday. The entire Gershwin program will be repeated 8 pm Saturday. bso.org; 617-266-1492.
